It's always good when a record takes you by surprise. That's certainly the case with Bless You's latest EP, which provides a debut for previously unheard producer Youcef Debbihi AKA Sea of Disillusions. What's most impressive about the three-tracker - aside from the trippy, spaced-out tone throughout - is the quality of Debbihi's hard-to-pigeonhole productions. Combining tough drum machine beats with Arabic percussion, thickset basslines, whispered female vocals, undulating acid lines and foreboding electronics, the producer's trademark sound sits somewhere between Acid Arab, Moscoman, Middle Eastern new wave and the kind of dark, druggy chuggers so beloved of the late Andrew Weatherall. Intoxicating, mind-altering and unusual, Part 1 is a genuinely impressive debut.
