Considering the whole idea behind this album was to try and break free from the restrictive parameters of songwriting structure in its traditional sense, Christopher Bear - AKA Fools, AKA Grizzly Bear's drummer and multi-instrumental maestro - has actually created something that feels incredibly tight and precisely executed. Not exactly the expected results from a nine-week improvisation session that focused on finding out what might come from what. During that time, Bear would record jam sessions on one instrument before experimenting over the top with another, often driven by a desire to create a sonic response to the original sounds. Perhaps not so fast and loose, then, but instead following a clear and concise idea, nevertheless what we're offered is a collection of beguiling, dreamy pieces unbound in genre terms but defined by lush, exotic downtempo journeys.
