For fans of Rene Pawlowitz's distinctive brand of techno, this album has been a long time coming. The Final Experiment - named in honour of a label he established a few years ago, rather than as a hint at imminent retirement - appears five years after the acclaimed The Killer. Predictably, it more than justifies the epic wait. Hugely evocative, brilliantly produced and packed full of sublime moments, it sees Pawlowitz supplement his off-kilter techno sounds - see the dub-flecked broken techno shuffle of "Turn 2 Turn", acid-fired melancholy of "Taken Effekt", sludgy "Black Heart", and the breakbeat-driven late night bliss of "Outgoing Society" - with a string of wonderfully emotion-rich, downtempo explorations. Of these, it's the cinematic ambient moodiness of "Xtra" and glistening "Extreme Sat" that stand out.
