Currently residing in Washington DC, but with roots in Gary, Indiana (home to the Jackson family), Jonathan Meacham aka Diggs Duke is an insanely talented singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, newly signed to Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings imprint. The 28 year-old self-released a string of EPs throughout 2012 via his Bandcamp - a stream of vivid sketches showcasing supreme musicianship and craft. Rooted in jazz, Meacham's arrangements are remarkably refreshing, eschewing traditional song structure for a looser groove-based aesthetic, punctuated with short bursts of his effortless Dwele-esque vocals. Offering For Anxious serves as an introduction to the genius of Diggs Duke - a taste of what is to come from the prodigious talent. At just 25 minutes long, the record is over in the blink of an eye. Like a brief but captivating firework display, the ten tracks map out the highlights of those self-released EPs (Gravity, Black Gold, Mass Exodus Vol. 1 + 2) and tease ahead to the enormous potential within these sketches. Drawing on influences from the past as much as the present, Diggs Duke name checks the likes of Herbie Hancock, Nick Drake ("It's like melancholy and joyful at the same time."), John Coltrane, Thundercat (his cover version of Is It Love? is included here), Flying Lotus and Emily King. From the glorious percussive shakedown of Lion's Feast, to the dusty bruk bounce of Something In My Soul (reminiscent of Madlib's excursions as DJ Rels), and the richly textured sax/vocal duet Born From You... this is a powerful and convincing debut from a young man with a bright future. Stand back.
