Derya Yildirim is so many things: a gifted singer, baglama virtuoso, underground star, ambassador of Turkey's rich musical heritage, innovator and preserver of this musical tradition, and simply a damn good performer. She has a groove; she's just as great with the Anadolu soul band Grup Simsek as she is with the chamber music orchestra Ensemble Resonanz. She brings the hall to life, whether it's the Elbphilharmonie or a small club. Together with French keyboardist and producer Graham Mushnik, she has made a children's album: Hey Dostum, Çak! (translated: "Give me five!") What a great idea! Derya Yildirim from Hamburg knows many of the songs from her childhood: They are lullabies, folk songs that her father played on the baglama, or that she sang in Turkish lessons, that she heard on cassettes from her grandparents, or that the baglama teacher taught her and other Turkish-speaking children in the local shop in Hamburg-Veddel.
