The latest album from prolific producer, vocalist and close Basic Channel confidante Paul St. Hilaire is by far his most intriguing yet. Charting a musical lineage from the Caribbean island of Dominica to Berlin over the course of a lifetime, Tikiman Vol. 1 goes straight back to the artist's roots as Tikiman, before legal troubles saw to a name change. Meditating on a life torn between Kreuzberg and Santo Domingo, this is a restless sonic fusion, miring ambient backings, ricocheting dub sonics, and distinctively bluesy baritone singing from Hilaire. It' all errs towards top-quality production, sure to sink the listener into nicely fugueish states.
