Mark Lanegan made his name in the grunge years as frontman for Screaming Trees, but he's since proven to be a genuine maverick who reinvents himself at will, with that signature dusky voice at the centre of his musical adventures. Still, it comes as a welcome surprise to see him pair up with Not Waving for this unlikely trip into noirish storytelling set to haunting threads of minimal wave synth work. It's largely a downbeat listen, with plenty of space for Not Waving to exercise found sounds and stately synth tones in between the more structured songs, but it's not all sleepy as the rasping "Burned Out Babylon" ably demonstrates. The results are as unpredictable as the collaboration itself, and surely that's what you want from two such auteurs when they cross swords?
