This epic debut album from Steve Summers, Beau Wanzer and Melvin Oliphant's Mutant Beat Dance project has been a long time in the making. In fact, they started working on the music - and accompanying booklet of photgraphs - three years ago. Like their previous work, it's a conscious effort to update the anything-goes spirit of Chicago's legendary Music Box club in the early 1980s, where resident DJ Ron Hardy regularly blurred the boundaries between post punk, dub disco, industrial, minimal wave, EBM and proto-house. Over the course of 25 tracks, the trio provides their own interpretation of this analogue-rich, machine driven fusion, effortlessly flitting between a range of mind-altering dancefloor jams, freaky soundscapes, heady musical interludes and muscular, flash-fried workouts.
