Earlier in the year, Kevin "Pangaea" McAuley finally resurfaced after an 18-month break with "Bone Sucka", a deliciously forthright EP that somehow managed to distill 30 years of British bass music sounds into two twisted heavyweight cuts. Fittingly, there's a serious nod to that very same history - and his former home city of Leeds - in "Cuba Vox", the title track from the producer's latest club-ready two-tracker. It's a throbbing, warehouse-ready techno pumper that utilizes elements of the same Cuba Gooding Jr. vocal sampled by Nightmares on Wax for their 1990 bleep classic "Aftermath", as well as raw electronics and plenty of low-end weight. Flipside "You Know What's Up" is arguably even heavier, with trippy hip-hop vocal samples rising above a deliciously dense tribal techno groove.
