More than simple out-takes, these 3 pieces formed their own unique setting and were deliberately separated as the recording process came to a close and often appeared in his recent live shows. A conscious decision was made that this ’set’ should appear together and therefore, represent a link between what has gone before and what lies ahead. From the first looped vocal / stuttering percussion that works across the ambience of Music Removed, a deeper compulsion is apparent. Cascading spoken samples and introspection that drift, swirl and merge infinitely. Patterns follows, embedding a love of the fourth world with melancholic yearnings that rise and fall as a quickly as memories. Vexillations completes the piece. Intense percussion and sensuous chime loops create distance to previous work. Modulating and meditative, an almost architectural structure appears from the dense sequencing and reverberations. What forms Gary Caruth will explore next are unclear, but the existential wonder of his mysterious sound-scapes and tone make for a celestial journey.
