Given the increased interest in indigenous tropical sounds of late, it's unsurprising to see Strut Records paying tribute to a lesser-known variant of the style. For the uninitiated, Sega Music is a style of goodtime dance music first developed in Mauritius. Soul Souk Sega focuses on the genre's most vibrant period during the 1970s, when electric instrumentation and early synthesizer sounds were adding greater vibrancy to the style's African and European influences. It makes for hugely enjoyable listening, with creole vocals rising over humid grooves and delightfully lo-fi production. As usual with Strut, the accompanying, in-depth sleeve notes tell the story of the style in delicious detail.
